Dental Caries
Dental caries, commonly known as cavities, are areas of decay on the teeth caused by the breakdown of enamel due to bacterial activity. This process creates holes or structural damage in the teeth, leading to pain and potential tooth loss.
Dental caries primarily result from the accumulation of plaque—a sticky film of bacteria—on the teeth, which produces acids that erode enamel. Factors like poor oral hygiene, frequent sugar consumption, and inadequate fluoride exposure also contribute to caries development.
Untreated dental caries can lead to severe toothache, infection, and tooth loss, potentially affecting overall oral health. They may also cause complications such as abscesses and impact chewing and speaking functions.
Consult a dentist if you notice persistent toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold foods, or visible holes in your teeth. It's important to seek professional care if you experience swelling or signs of infection around the affected area.
